  25. Installation Notes
  26. To install this Cubase Program for Macintosh you should simply double-click the 'Installer' icon.

  32. This will automatically copy all the required files to your hard disk. The Installer will create a folder for the program on the outer-most level on the hard disk. You can move it later if you wish.

  34. Cubase VST System Requirements
  35.  
  36. • Cubase VST needs a Power Macintosh to operate.
  37. Sorry, but we need the PowerMac for the raw processor power that makes VST special. Please note that some lower-end Macs with PowerPC chips (particularly Performa Macs) may still not be able to run VST because they lack other necessary hardware. There are some PowerMac accelerator cards available for older 68K Macintoshes, but they are not capable of running VST as they still have significant 'bottle-necks' because of unaccelerated components.

  39. • A minimum of 16 MB RAM is required.
  40. but the more the better... 24MB or 32MB would be nice, and RAM is getting cheaper all the time. :-)

  42. • System 7.5 or higher is required.
  43. • System 7.6.1,  System 8 , or higher is recommended.

  46. • Cubase VST requires a 2nd level cache.
  47. It will run without, but it makes no sense to try, you would be missing so much system performance. A 256K cache will give good results on slower systems, but if you have a really fast Power Macintosh (150Mhz 604 or better), you might get even better performance with a larger cache.

  49. • Older  PowerPC PowerBooks cannot be fully supported.
  50. Older PowerPC Powerbooks don't have 'disk to memory' SCSI-DMA transfer or 2nd level cache chips, and can only manage 3 or 4 audio channels at best. The latest series of Powerbooks now have SCSI-DMA and the 2nd Level cache. These should be fine for Cubase VST, if they meet our other specifications. We would however advise you to talk to your computer dealer or Steinberg National Distributor for the latest information before buying a PowerBook.

  52. Performance and Troubleshooting

  54. Important Settings for Best Performance
  55.  
  56. • Hard disks for audio must have an ASYNCHRONOUS driver installed.
  57. Otherwise you'd be lucky if you can play more than 3 tracks. 
  58. The Apple Hard Disk Driver is probably the best one if you are only using the internal hard disk shipped with an Apple PowerMac. Unfortunately this only works for internal (APPLE ROM) HD's.
  59. For best results we recommend that you use a second hard drive for audio recording formatted with the FWB Hard Disk Toolkit 2.01 or higher.
  60. Make sure that 'Blind transfers' or similar are enabled.

  62. • File Sharing should be turned off. 
  63. AppleTalk may cause performance problems as well, especially when server(s) are mounted.
  64.  
  65. • Virtual Memory must be switched off. (Control Panel 'Memory').
  66. This also applies to Connectix RAM Doubler - it must be disabled for Cubase to run.
  67.  
  68. • You should set 'Modern Memory Manager' active in the Control Panel 'Memory'. 
  69. It works without, but starting the program and some other actions are significantly slower.
  70. Please note: this Control Panel Option is obsolete since Mac OS version 7.5.5 (Modern Memory Manager
  71. is now always ON).

  73. • You should not use a hard disk connected to a Digidesign SCSI card (see below for details)
  74.  
  75. • If you are having MIDI transmission problems:
  76. Try changing the setting of the USE SERIAL DRIVER switch (in the Cubase-> MIDI Setup window). By default this is ON. If you are using system software older than System 7.5.5, you may find setting this switch to OFF gives better results. Please note that you must restart Cubase for this setting to take effect !

  79. What to do if Cubase does not immediately work.

  81. • Try switching off all unnecessary extensions.

  83. • If the Cubase Program gets stuck during start up:
  84. Cubase VST can be sensitive to its memory requirements. For instance on a 7200 with 16 MB, it can get stuck if you assign 6500KB to Cubase, while it would work fine with 6000KB and 7000KB(!). Try different settings if it gets stuck, or trash the Cubase preferences file. Don't panic - you should only have to do this once.

  86. • If problems occur with Digidesign's AudioMedia 2 Hardware (on NuBus Macs)
  87. Digidesign hardware can be used with their Sound Drivers. However with the AudioMedia 2 card, you can NOT use the Input. Any attempt to do so may cause unpredictable results or crashes (NuBus machines only).

  89. • If you use Digidesign's AudioMedia 3 Hardware (on PCI Macs)...
  90. ... please use the Steinberg ASIO driver support for this card in preference to the older Digidesign Sound Drivers. It is more efficient and gives better results. Please note that after installation you will find a new Digidesign INIT in the ASIO folder (inside the Cubase folder). You should drag this file to your closed System Folder, and select OK when your computer asks you if you want to copy it into your Extensions folder. Restart your Mac in order to use your AudioMedia 3 with Cubase VST.

  96. What to do about Audio Performance Problems

  98. • If the audio stutters or mutes during playback.
  99. The 'System Setup' Dialog can be used to adjust certain parameters. Please refer to the 'Audio Recording' Handbook for details.

  102. Experiment to see which works best with your hard-disk.

  110. • Use the 'Performance' window (from the Audio Menu)

  112. • Are you using a Digidesign audio system? Then see below.

  114. • If you find unused audio files on your hard disk.
  115. If the program crashes it may leave unused files on your disk. Look at the recording destination folder, there may be files which don't appear to be related to your song (especially those with only 512 bytes used).

  117. • If the MIDI appears to be delayed.
  118. The 'System Setup' Dialog can be used to adjust the MIDI pre-delay. Please refer to the 'Audio Recording' Handbook for details.

  120. • If the Monitor 'thru' delay is distracting. 
  121. Every system is going to have some audio-thru delay. If you find the delay associated with your hardware combination too long, then you can disable the monitoring and use an external mixing desk, or use direct Monitoring ('Play Through') if accessible in the ASIO devices' Control Panel).

  123. • If you have a PCI Mac...
  124. ...we recommend you use the ASIO-DAV support for the internal hardware rather than the traditional Sound Manager. The results are better because the monitoring delay times are much more predictable. You notice the improvement as a tighter alignment of audio and MIDI events.

  126. This setup and trouble shooting documentation is subject to change as versions are tested with new hardware and system versions.

  128. Important Note for Digidesign Users
  129. Some Digidesign systems require that you connect your audio hard disk to a special Digidesign SCSI card. Examples of such systems are Session 8 and ProTools III. The SCSI card included in these systems is optimized for data transfer within the Digidesign system, rather than to/from the computer's processor. Therefore, trying to use Cubase VST to record or play back audio from a hard disk connected to such a Digidesign SCSI card will provide poor results in terms of audio performance (you will only be able to play back a very limited number of audio tracks).

  131. With the VST version of Cubase, we strongly recommend you to record audio on a hard disk connected to the computer's own SCSI connector (or possibly to the internal hard disk).

  133. If you wish, you can power down your system and reconnect any hard disk(s) currently connected to the Digidesign card to the computer's own SCSI connector. This will allow you to use the hard disk with Cubase VST, both to record new files and to play back files already on the disk.
